  biological oxygen demand

  mg per litre of dissolved oxygen used by micro-organisms during the feeding process on the organic content of a body of water. It is thus possible to determine the level of organic pollution of the water. A BOD of <3mg/l can be considered to indicate 'clean' water while one in excess of 30mg/l would indicate gross pollution.
